Orchester

You are a reliable player and can hold your part in an ensemble without any problem. You play all the instruments from descant to bass, and are prepared to study your part in advance. You are able to relate to visual clues given by the conductor.

J.S. Bach, Singet dem Herrn & P. Richards, Continental Drift

During this Air-Force day we will be working with two compositions. As many of you know, Paul Richards passed away in January and we would like to remember him by playing one of his pieces as well as one by the grand maestro Johann Sebastian Bach.

Bach wrote the vocal motet 'Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied' (BWV 225) in 1727, during his years in Leipzich. The text is taken from three psalms of praise and is full of joy, as are the musical figures and rhythms. The composition is in three movements and is set for two four-part choirs that are often musically juxtaposed. 'Singet dem Herrn' will require some individual study, but rest assured, it's worth it!

Paul Richards has done numerous arrangements for recorder ensembles as well as original compositions. His 'Continental Drift' from 2014 is a very idiomatic and a typically Paul medley of folksongs from the British Isles. It is scored for descant down to contrabass and contains songs about war, ladies, frogs and hunting scenes. Fun!

The score and parts are available at http://www.gardane.info (Bach) and http://www.willobie.co.uk/willobiepress.htm WPL 23 (Richards)

Kammer Orchester

The Chamber Orchestra is a one-to-a-part orchestra of players who are at least diploma standard. You will need to practise your part thoroughly before the day. If you haven’t been before and would like to be considered for this orchestra please contact Josée Beeson by email at josee@beeson.me

J.S. Bach, Brandenburg Concerto & P. Richards, Triptych

During this Air-Force day we will be working with compositions. As many of you know, Paul Richards passed away last January, and we like to remember him on this day by playing one of his pieces and one of grand maestro Johann Sebastian Bach.

Bach composed his third Brandenburg concerto for the curious and specific orchestra instrumentation of 3 violins, 3 violas, 3 cellis, violone and continuo. It is a lovely work in ritornello structure with lots of variety, musical conversations, harmonic subtleties and italianate melodic twists. Joris' arrangemens for 3 trebles, 3 tenors and 3 basses with contrabass recorder at the bottom is daunting and challenging. Feast for the fingers and the mind!

Tryptich is one Paul Richards' original compositions for recorder ensemble. It's a piece in three contrasting moods and movements, based on a specific 5-note figure, resembling the Dorian mode. It's abstract at times, tunefull other times, and always interesting. Triptych was written in 2005-2007 and premièred by Blockwork. It has not been played often, and we're looking forward to rediscovering this great work by Paul.
