Fugue in a

J.S. Bach

Arrangement: Joris Van Goethem

SATB

Our fascination and admiration for Johann Sebastian Bach inspired us to make several transcriptions of his compositions. The fugue BWV 543 'seduced' us with its rhythmic vitality and constant flow of energy, which carries through from the very first note until the last. The general style of writing and the striking theme with its many leaps, made this fugue very interesting to arrange for recorder quartet and provides the four players with an exciting challenge.

Although this fugue is paired with the Prelude BWV 543 in 18th-century copies, it is generally believed that Bach conceived it as a separate composition. The extensive length - 5 or 6 minutes (depending on your temperament)- and its well balanced form, make it a piece of music which can convincingly stand on its own.
