A Turkish Bumble Bee Türkischer Hummelflug

Jan Van Landeghem

A musical joke about themes from W.A. Mozart & N. Rimski-Korsakov

SAT Grossbass-C/Bass-F

Preface:

Since their debut in 1987 I have had the good fortune to have followed the musical development of this fantastic ensemble. They have made a great point of premiering the music of modern composers. Inspired by them, at least ten of my compositions have seen the light of day. The "Turkish Bumble Bee" has probably become the most popular encore of them all and I am very pleased that this enjoyable and humorous piece has now been published.

The blending of parts of existing melodies into a new whole, is certainly not unfamiliar in the history of music. The so called quodlibet has provided light musical entertainment for house concerts and other chamber music settings since baroque times. Applying this technique seemed to be particularly well suited to the task at hand which was to offer the audience a pleasant yet contemporary musical dessert with which to end a concert.
