Ballo del granduca

J.P. Sweelinck

arrangement: J. Van Goethem

SATB

The title "Ballo del granduca" refers to an Italian dance from "La Pellegrina" by Emilio de Cavalieri (around 1550-1602) which was performed at the marriage of Grand Duke Ferdinand of Tuscany to Christine of Lorraine. The dance appears in many different arrangements by composers such as G. Frescobaldi, F. Caroso and P. Philips. Even though Sweelincks version is considered to be his most famous work, new research has revealed compelling evidence that the composer may actually have been his student Samuel Scheidt (1587-1654).

The variations are clearly influenced by the style of the English virginalists and they lend themselves naturally for an arrangement for recorder quartet with a virtuosic upper voice and attractive passage work for the bass.
