Concerto und Fuga

J.S. Bach

BWV 595 is actually an arrangement Bach made of part of a concerto composed by the Prince Johann Ernst of Saxony. The original composition has unfortunately been lost. It was made while Bach was engaged at the Court of Saxe-Weimar (1708-1717). It is a light, sparkling and unpretentious work, that, in this version for recorder quartet, gives each of the voices, including the bass recorder, the opportunity to shine.
The fugue, BWV 545, is another piece in which each part is endowed with its own special beauty. This fugue was conceived for organ. In our arrangement for recorders, the monumental organ sound is transformed into an intimate dialogue between the four individual instruments expressing the personalities of the different players. This edition of transcriptions of Bach’s music is a very gratifying addition to the body of repertoire for the recorder.

Both the Concerto and the Fuga in this volume are organ transcriptions. The concerto is full of running 16th notes and contrasts well with the slow fugue theme in half notes and quartet notes. All the parts are interesting. The Concerto is very challenging (mostly due to speed and endless 16th notes), the fugue is less so. This edition "feels good". The music is laid out well; the individual parts of the concerto are printed on two or three foldout pages with the guga printed on the back. I look forward to more of the Flanders Recorder Quartet editions.
